Lupita Nyong’o is Our Big Chop Hero

In 2014 she was named the World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People’s Magazine, but to us Lupita Nyong’o will always be the champion of the TWA (teeny weeny afro) and our Big Chop Hero. This Oscar award winning actress bravely did the Big Chop at the age of 19 after her father jokingly mentioned she should cut off her hair because maintaining her relaxed hair was too expensive.

As we can imagine, it was a lot to consider. “I spent days thinking about it first,” she says about the decision. “Once I did it, it was very liberating, but I also felt very naked. When you feel the wind on your scalp, it’s like, Oh, my God. But I’ve kept my hair short ever since.”

And we are all thankful she did! Here is Lupita rocking her stunning signature look in a variety of styles and cuts.

Not only do we admire Lupita’s ability to mix-up her look, we love her refusal to ascribe to a conventional form of beauty. In an interview with People Magazine Lupita spoke about how her view of beauty once equalled “light skin and long, flowing hair.” We thank this stunning actress for challenging those stereotypes and being a representation of bold, black beauty.
